Foreclosures force families to leave pets
August 20th, 2008 Posted in Pet GamesThe home foreclosure crisis has affected The Humane Society of Ventura County shelter in Ojai.
Families losing their homes and moving into rental properties must leave their pets behind and are turning to the Humane Society Shelter to take dogs and cats and put them up for adoption. Since it is a nokill shelter, many want to be sure their pets find a new home. “It is painful to watch the faces of these people leaving their pets after having them as part of their families for years,” said Jolene Hoffman, shelter director. “It’s so heartbreaking for the families and for all of us working here. Each day we get six to 10 calls from people losing their homes. We are now completely filled to capacity and cannot take any more animals without help.”
The society is issuing an appeal for donations. “People can donate a gasoline card, a gift certificate for food from a pet supply store or just cash so we can pay our increased utility bills,” said Hoffman. “We have over 100 animals here that must be cared for, fed and bathed every day. Also if you are considering a new pet for your family, please visit our shelter. Many of these animals are housebroken and used to being in a loving home. They will make wonderful companions for years to come.”
