Owners can’t afford to keep pets
July 9th, 2008 Posted in Pet GamesThe shepherd mix was dropped off at the Humane Society in Tampa Wednesday morning.
His family was heartbroken, because they couldn’t afford his care. “They came to us out of desperation, had lost their job and then their home.” Sherry Silk from the Humane Society of Tampa Bay explains, “And they were going to have to move into an apartment and couldn’t keep a big dog like this.” Teddy has become another victim of the economy.
More and more families are finding they can either pay the bills or keep the family pet. “It’s a matter of they can’t afford the vet care or they’ve lost their home and are moving to a place where they can’t have dogs,” Silk said.
The shelter also has a program for those who can’t afford food for their dogs or cats, but want to keep them. The organization offers free bags of food to anyone who needs one.
Teddy’s family left a note behind for prospective new owners. The dog had been with the family since he was a puppy. They have 3 children who loved him.
But the family’s house payment went up. Then the foreclosure notices starting coming in the mail. So the family said they had no choice, but to give him up.
