Poor Economy Leads Many To Give Up Pets
October 31st, 2008 Posted in Pet PicturesIn Wisconsin there’s a reported 44 percent increase in foreclosures for the third quarter, and because of that, Wisconsin Humane Society officials said more pets are being dropped off at shelters.
“This last September our surrenders were up quite substantially,” Angela Speed, the Community Relations Manager for the Humane Society, said. “There’s been a 34 percent increase from September 2007 and September 2008 comparing just those two months.”
Speed said pet owners can be vague about their reasons for surrendering, but officials are seeing the economy as the biggest factor. Wisconsin’s unemployment is up 0.1 percent from the year before, and the most recent state data shows foreclosures are up 44 percent.
“It didn’t have the best of life so far, but they moved to Mexico and couldn’t bring the dog with, so we’re happy to bring her into our family,” Elsner said. “It’s not a big deal to take in a dog that’s unwanted. It’s not unwanted to us. We love it.”
Officials say adoptions have also jumped because it is only taking one to two days for these surrendered animals to be placed in new homes.
