Historic mansion badly damaged by fire

A double-story 1930s art deco mansion in Kew, in Melbourne’s
inner eastern suburbs, has been severely damaged by fire early
today.
Metropolitan Fire Brigade Commander Col Harris says the blaze
destroyed the rear of the home in Hyton Crescent where part of the
second storey of the building collapsed and severely damaged the
front of the house.
He said the owner and only occupant of the home, a woman in her
50s, was taken to hospital in deep shock.
The woman’s pet dog is missing and Cmdr Harris says they are
hoping it escaped the fire.
“We are sifting through the house now and we’re hoping we don’t
come across the dog’s remains,” Cmdr Harris said.
Fire investigators will try to determine the cause of the blaze
later today, he said.
