Rabies vaccines for dogs and other pets will be offered on Saturday at a Long Island animal shelter.

It’s the law in New York state for dogs, cats and domesticated ferrets to be vaccinated against rabies. Nassau County health officials say 67 rabid raccoons have been found in the county since 2004, and they say it’s important to vaccinate pets.

Rabies is transmitted by the bite of a rabid animal. The rabies virus may also be spread when a cut or open skin lesion is exposed to a rabid animal’s saliva.
