How do I keep my ferret in one room?
August 13th, 2008 Posted in Reptile PetsMany ferret owners allow their ferrets free roam of one or two rooms during playtime. However, if you don’t have doors you can close to keep them in this area, it can be difficult to find a good ferret gate. Gates available for children and other pets have spaces that even a larger ferret could easily walk through or climb. With so few options, what should you do?

You can also use a sheet of Plexiglas as a gate by using hinges to create a door, pressure mounting it in the doorway, or using four dowels to hold it in place. Plexiglas can be nice for your ferrets because it allows them to see what’s going on outside their play area.
If your ferrets are in their own room, you could also remove the regular door from the doorway and replace it with a half door. This will give you easier access to them, and it will make it easy to get in and out of the room.
Finally, you can modify existing child and pet gates by fixing sheets of Plexiglas to them with wire ties.
Regardless of what gate you choose, make sure it is at least 29″ high. If your ferret is especially good at climbing and jumping, you may need to make it higher. And always remember that a 1″ gap is enough to allow a ferret to escape - if he can fit his head in there, he can probably fit the rest of his body too.
