New law would make spaying and neutering mandatory for some pets
February 2nd, 2008 Posted in Reptile PetsA new bill just introduced in the California legislature would make spaying and neutering your cats and dogs mandatory, that is, unless your pet is a registered purebred, with a government-issued permit. Proponents of the proposed law say it would cut down on stray animals in our state, but its not without controversy. Its a bill thats intended to cut down on stray dogs and cats, like the ones that wind up at Animal Samaritans. It would require pet owners to get their dogs and cats spayed and neutered right away. If the pets didnt have the procedure by the time they were four months old, and Animal Control found out, their owners could be fined. Many animal activists say its a good idea. But theres one part of the bill that some say amounts to little more than discrimination. Thats the provision that says pure-bred dogs and cats would be exempt from the law, as long as their owners bought a special permit. That would mean Jobe, whos 100 percent mini-pincher, would not have to be fixed. But his friend, Jackson, a mixed breed, would. Jobes a rescue dog, whose owners paid $200 to bring him home. They say, while they love their dog and his pedigree, they dont think it should give him or any other pet special privileges. And that debate will no doubt continue in the legislature — and the dog park, too.
