Pets fall victim to economic and housing crisis
July 23rd, 2008 Posted in Reptile PetsIn these tough economic times, some families are making drastic decisions just to keep a roof over their heads.
They are doing all they can to save money, even giving up their beloved pets.
Since Palo Alto, California resident Adrianna Rodriguez lost her job, she’s been downsizing, partly by moving into a smaller home which doesn’t allow pets.
Palo Alto is one of the bay area’s wealthiest neighborhoods, but even here the animal shelter is almost full, largely because as the economy tightens more and more people are forced to make tough choices.
“People have said flat out that they can not afford their pets anymore. We know this is a hard decision. They sit in our front office and they will be sobbing. This is a member of their family and they are giving them up,” said Sandi Stadler of Palo Alto Animal Services.
Bay area pet lovers are seeing increased costs.
The price of pet food for instance jumped six percent this month, the largest monthly increase recorded.
To care for an animal is about a thousand dollars a year, and that’s excluding emergency vet bills.
Stadler says that if you are giving up your pet, be like Adrianna, bring it to a shelter, so staff can find out its history and help to find it a new home.
