Service offers shelter for pets
June 11th, 2008 Posted in Reptile PetsThe love and care that people have for their pets can sometimes have no boundaries. In ordinary times, they feed them, give them shelter and make sure they are treated properly if they fall ill.
However, extraordinary situations occur and while most people have a plan what to do for their families, they do not have a clue what to do for their pets. During Hurricane Katrina, about 600,000 pets died in the rising floodwaters because people did not have a place or a plan for their pets. In addition, some people died trying to save their pets in the catastrophe.
Pet Paradise has the answer for people looking for a place to house their pets in case of a disaster such as a hurricane. The Florida-based company has opened a new location at Bush Intercontinental Airport that is Category 3 rated and can hold anywhere from 350 to 400 pets.
If there is such an emergency, Acosta-Rua said people should have vaccination documents ready before they register at Pet Paradise.
The IAH facility is a solid concrete structure and has a back-up generator in case of power loss. Pets can stay up to 48 hours after a mandatory evacuation. There is no charge for pets to stay at Pet Paradise.
While the pets are staying at Pet Paradise, they are well fed, given plenty of water and are cared for by a well-trained staff.
“They employees are certified by the Pet Care Services Association,” Acosta-Rua said. “They take their study courses and tests and we do internal testing as well. These are pet people and are passionate about pets.”
Pet Paradise takes dogs and cats or any size, from Great Danes to Chihuahuas.
Acosta-Rua said that people should prepare a list of items they will need for at least three days if they want to place their pets at Pet Paradise. This list should include paper towels, grooming equipment, any medications, a pet carrier with bedding, plastic bags, litter and proof of health records.
