Show heaps love on pets

A new show at the North Texas State Fair and Rodeo this year is teaching attendees about the importance of caring for and adopting animals from shelters and rescue groups.

Christine Mullen, owner and trainer for Pets Overboard, said the show’s cast comprises six dogs, three cats, a skunk and five rats known as “pi-rats” that were adopted from animal shelters and rescue groups.

These animals are used to convey the message that good and loving pets can be found in shelters and rescue centers. Many good animals are euthanized because they are unable to find homes, Mullen said. Animals don’t ask for anything, but they give people everything, she added.

Pets Overboard, based in Orlando, Fla., started touring the country at fairs and festivals in November. Since its debut, the show has appeared in half a dozen cities, also teaching pet owners the importance of controlling the pet population by having their animals spayed or neutered, Mullen said.

In the time the show has been in Denton, the animals have performed more than a dozen shows and are expected to perform two shows on weekdays and three shows on Saturday for the remainder of the fair.

Hunter Massey, 16, of Burleson, who attended the fair to show a heifer, said he thought the show was “pretty cool.” The animals were well-trained and it was obvious that a lot of hard work was involved in preparing the animals for the show, Massey said, adding that he wished he could train his animals as well as the ones in the show.
