Tips for Evacuations and Fire Safety for Pets
February 2nd, 2008 Posted in Reptile PetsThere are two types of evacuations, both decisions made by the fire department: Voluntary evacuations: The fire may head to your neighborhood. Mandatory evacuations: The fire is a threat to property and life. A mandatory evacuation is the law. If you dont leave once the sheriffs department advises you to, you could be cited with a misdemeanor. If you have the time gather up your personal belongings, like medications and important documents and better yet, keep them in a steel or fire safe box. For pets: When you evacuate your home you also need to make sure your pets can get out safely too. Doing that depends on whether they are small household pets or horses. Make sure you have the ability to transport your dogs and cats in a portable cage. Pack food and water. If you must leave your cat or dog behind: Bring them outside. Use a room with no windows and ventilation, like a bathroom. Do not tie them up. If you have horses or larger animals and the ability to put them in trailers, get them out during a voluntary evacuation. Dont wait until the last minute. If you have to leave your large animal behind, leave them in a pre-selected area cleared of anything that could add fuel to the approaching fire.
