Unwanted pets being dumped in the desert
February 2nd, 2008 Posted in Reptile PetsUnwanted pets being dumped in the open desert is a growing problem up in the Hi Desert. The animals are left to fend for themselves, often with deadly results “Sissy” is a 7-month卢-old kitten. Shes lovable and quite a climber. She was also abandoned “This kitten right here was dumped in a box at my fence at two days old. Her eyes were not open yet,” said Kathy Klomhaus with the Morongo Basin Animal Shelter. “Sissy” was lucky enough to make it to a shelter and now has a chance to be adopted by a loving family. But many other unwanted pets have not been so fortunate. Klomhaus runs the Morongo Basin Animal Shelter in Joshua Tree. “Well come in in the mornings and there will be boxes of puppies and kittens that dont even have their eyes open. There will be boxes saying, 鈥榯ake our pets. Theres nothing in the box because coyotes clean them out in the night.” “Weve had more than one puppy thrown over the fence and had broken legs. One thrown over got its head caught in a drain during the night and it drowned in the drain.” Recently, a box of 4 kittens was left in a dumpster behind a convenience store in Yucca Valley. Someone saved them by taking them to the shelter. “We took them in, vaccinated them, got them to homes, but it happens a lot up here.” “Its sad seeing how theyre dumped and mistreated. It feels good working here, to place them in homes. Its rewarding.” Workers at the shelter say its a constant battle trying to save pets that have been put in the trash, tied to trees or let loose in the open desert. “Were fortunate we dont euthanize, but a lot of places dont have a choice because therere so many animals being left, its a kinder fate than leaving them in the desert looking for water and food.”
